Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, MD on September 20, 1878. His father was a failure as a salesman and was drunk most of the time. Sinclair divided his time between his extremely poor parents and wealthy grandparents. Sinclair contributes the vastly different lifestyles to what lead him to his socialist beliefs. Upton wrote short stories to feed his family and to pay for his way through college. He was not a successful writer until he wrote The Jungle.
Sinclair was married Meta Fuller from 1902-1911. Then was married to Mary Kimbrough from 1913-1961. Six months after her death he married his third wife, Mary Willis.
Upton Sinclair died December 18, 1968. He wrote a total of 90 books.
