Roosevelts new mission
Initially, Roosevelt did not believe the books description of the meat packing companies. So he sent his commissioners to Chicago to investigate. When they returned, the commissioners criticized lack of meat-inspection regulations. They also advised that inspections take place at every stage of the processing of meat. In addition, they wanted the secretary of agriculture to make rules requiring the "cleanliness and wholesomeness of animal products."
Roosevelt met with Sinclair and told him “Radical action must be taken to do away with the efforts of arrogant and selfish greed on the part of the capitalist.”
